Return of Koffee with Karan

one of my favorite shows ... I can't wait for this one to come back. Here's an article on mid-day about what to expect on the next season:

Koffee with Karan is preparing to return with B-town’s biggest and best in November (Johar starts shooting for season two in October). Karan, who has just returned from London, walks into his office wearing his Prada shades (like all devils do) and a week-old stubble. He is suffering from jetlag and downing lemon tea in his office, before heading for a meeting with Star TV’s Sameer Nair to discuss the return of his show. Here’s what you can expect to see in KWK Dwitiyaa.
Lots of expectations after the first season. Is that playing on your mind?Yes. But what we’ve tried to do is to not think of that. Everybody’s wondering who I’m going to call on the show now. I’m going to call back a lot of the same people who were in the first season, but in unusual combinations. People will want to see the same stars. Viewers like to see what people from the film fraternity have to say, have to chat about, talk about… so I’ll call the same people. As you know, people’s lives, relationships and circumstances keep changing so there will be new things to talk about.
Like Abhishek and Aishwarya…Why? Something happened between them?
We’ll come back to that later. So, what’s different this year? The set is different, but I’m the same. I’m ageing, so I am trying to be young, more alive, hip and happening in this season. I’m combating the age phenomenon, so I will just try and look cooler, if that’s possible. Actually, it’s impossible but the endeavour will be there.
You’ve exhausted all your star friends. Won’t that be a drawback? No, they will all be back but in different combinations.
So this time we might see Abhishek with Ash?But why do you want Ash and Abhishek together? Oh, because they’re in Dhoom 2, Umrao Jaan and Guru? Yeah, maybe because of their films, I should get them together. But I’m thinking of Abhishek in a more interesting way. Even Ash. I might also want to get Ash and Hrithik together because they are in Jodha-Akbar and in Dhoom 2. I’m keeping my mind open to many combinations.
The second season of most shows don’t fare well. Happened to KBC too.Sequels of movies, or second seasons of shows are always torn apart. Everything is compared and analysed. However great, good, or bad the second season is, as long as people watch it in numbers, that’s all one wants. Are there any fears in your mind?Oh, they’re always at the back of my mind. We are all nervous of what we should do. So one day, I just turned to the team and told them, ‘Let’s not over-think. Let’s not try and overcook the show just to prove a point. Let’s just be ourselves, the way we were.’ That’s what worked in season one. Let’s make more interesting combinations, change the set, and include some fun segments in the end that’ll make the show alive, different, unusual and talked about.
So the plan is…?I want to go a little mad with the show in terms of making it more irreverent, more tongue- in-cheek, more fun... and I hope people have fun. I’m praying that they actually do. I have a sense of humour about myself. I don’t mind anyone saying anything about me on national television or in print, if it’s said in jest. I’ll take it in that spirit. Let’s hope that everyone in this country develops a sense of humour. That’s the only way to survive.
What about the stars’ sense of humour?I hope they do too. Most of them are very sporting and very happy to be on the show. I have had no kind of backlash. Do you show the stars your questionnaire before you go on air?Never. They joke and ask me, ‘What are you going to ask in the rapid fire round?’ But I’ve never showed the questionnaire to anyone. And I think everyone who comes on the show comes in good faith. They know I would never cross the line.
And where do you draw that line?I always tell my guests, ‘I will ask you, you deny it and I’ll accept that. The fact that I am asking you is the fun element.’ And I make it a point not to ask anything that is not already been written about or talked about. If a star friend has confided in me, I will never bring that up on the show. I would ask questions that the world is asking. I would never ever ask what is sacred or a secret to them. That I am very careful about.
So your priority is your friendship?Yes. My relationships are far more important to me than the show, or my films, and my career. Offending people is not my thing. But being naughty, well that’s another thing.
Ajay Devgan refused to appear last season. Will you invite him this time?I don’t like to pressure people. I was very keen to have Ajay on season one, more so because I’d worked with him as a producer in Kaal, and he’s Kajol’s husband. But I think he’s just media shy in general. So I don’t want to push him because he really feels awkward coming on a show of this nature, so I will not try again.
Will you begin again with SRK and Kajol?(Grins) Can I not comment on that?
Mallika Sherawat was mentioned on every episode of KWK but she never made it to the show…(Laughs) Yes, she was the unofficial brand ambassador of the show. I meet her all the time and she says you’ve mentioned me in every show and not had me in any. But that’s because every time I went to her with an interesting combination, she had another idea. But this time, I will. Pyaar Ke Side/Effects has just released, and it looks like a fun film though I haven’t seen it.It is fun…I am sure it is. Rangita Nandy has a great sense of humour and I’m sure she has made a fun film.
How about Rangita with Mallika?Sorry, darling. But we only call stars on the show. Mallika and maybe Rahul will be a nice combination. Ok, what’s the worst compliment you’ve gotten for the show? It’s from my best friend, Adi (Chopra). He says he can’t bear to see me on television. As a mark of protest, he doesn’t watch my show. He feels I should be making movies, not ‘stuff like this’!

SRK wins over Brad Pitt

Forget Brad Pitt, declared Screen International in its Monday's Toronto International Film Festival special. 'The biggest stars in town were Bollywood movie titans Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.'

Rani Mukherji could have been on that list too but the actress, who was shooting in New York for the past several weeks, could not get her Canadian visa on time, according to Yash Raj Films.

If one took a look at the hordes of desis, and movie fans from Trindad, Guayana, South Africa, and the Arab countries outside the theatre where Never Say Goodbye (Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna) had a red carpet gala release, the Screen International comment made perfect sense.

The movie fans at the theatre where Brad Pitt was attending the premiere of his critically acclaimed Babel was miniscule (some 500 people) compared to over 2,000 outside the KANK venue.

But the mainstream publications, which in the past years have run glorious pictures of Lisa Ray and John Abraham (Water), Mallika Sherawat (The Myth) and Padma Lakshmi (tiny role in the little seen The Mistress of the Spices), have been ignoring the Indian star presence at the festival this year.

SRK at TIFFIndia has eight films (out of over 350 features and documentaries) at the festival. John Abraham is here to promote Kabul Express, with Bipasha Basu giving him company. And Nandita Das is promoting Maati Maay (A Grave-keeper's Tale), one of the most thought-provoking films at the festival.

But the Toronto Star newspaper ran a 400-word piece on page two of its festival special section under the headline, 'Bollywood stars thrill fans'. It also carried a picture of director Karan Johar.

Although many fans had seen KANK during its record-breaking run in the city, they still bought the tickets for the gala.

"We could have brought 1,000 friends to see Amitabh and Shah Rukh if tickets were available," said one teenager who had come with three of her friends.

Another teenager, who said he has seen most of Amitabh films, said, "Shah Rukh is great but Amitabh is like a god," he said smiling broadly. "At 65, he is like a superstar and he doesn't look his age at all."

Many said they had waited for over four hours to get a glimpse of Amitabh and Shah Rukh.

For Shah Rukh, the current Toronto visit makes up in some ways for the loss in 2001 when his home production Asoka was to have a gala screening at the festival. But Shah Rukh and his production team had booked their flight from New York either on September 11 or the next day. In the commotion that followed the terrorist attack on 9/11, the print of Asoka was reportedly misplaced at the airport and the film never made it to the festival.

John in Kabul Express

'I love to be in a film that puts story and script above actors'

Toronto has become a like a second home to John Abraham. Last year he spent over a week in the Canadian city promoting Deepa Mehta's Water at the Toronto International Film Festival. And he came this year to promote Kabul Express, a comedy of errors and looking beyond the stereotypes of an enemy.

Abraham, who played an idealistic lawyer in Water, now plays an Indian reporter in Afghanistan in the new film. The Taliban is on the run, but reporters are looking to interview members of the dreaded Afghan group. The story spanning two days links five people: two journalists from India including a photographer, an Afghan who hates the Taliban, a Taliban on the run and an American woman reporter.

Abraham spoke to rediff.com in between his visits to the gym. He ordered a four-egg omelet, insisting that he will have only the whites. Among many things, he also spoke about what it meant to be working with first time director Kabir Khan (Kabul Express) and how he deals with people who are convinced he cannot be a serious actor.

Tabu in Namesake

We haven't seen Tabu on the marquee in a full-fledged role for a long, long time.

Except for a half-baked role in Yash Chopra's Fanaa, the actress hasn't been in a film for almost a year.

But she has been busy, and here's proof.

Tabu's next film, The Namesake, is ready, and has been lapped up by audiences at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival. It was premiered at the festival on September 11.

Directed by Mira Nair, the film -- based on a best-selling novel by Jhumpa Lahiri -- also stars Irrfan and Kal Penn.

Here, the director-actress strike a pose for the portrait session of The Namesake at TIFF.

Shahrukh Khaike Paan Banaras Waalaa

Farhan Akhtar released the soundtrack of his Don remake a week ago, and the remixed Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy version is having a hard time comparing to the Kalyandji-Anandji classic.

We asked readers what they thought, and readers feel the new soundtrack -- which rehashes the original tunes -- doesn't match up at all.

And while we can't get over comparing Udit Narayan's version of Khaike Paan Banaras Wala to Kishore Kumar's immortal original, here is a still from Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra's version of the Amitabh Bachchan - Zeenat Aman classic.

The tributes seem well in place, anyway. The setting seems completely out of the 1978 classic, and film fans would note that the pattern on Shah Rukh's shirt is uncannily similar to that of the Big B's waistcoat in the original film.

Ash-Abhishek go alag-alag

By: Upala KBR http://www.mid-day.com April 25, 2006

Bollywood’s latest ‘it’ couple, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, have split. According to close family sources, the Bachchans decided against their marriage after it was discovered that Ash was manglik (with a strong influence of the planet Mangal, or Mars, in her astrological chart) and would cast a dark shadow on her husband’s career.

Superstitious family
According to an insider, the Bachchans are a very superstitious family, and didn’t want to take any chances with their bachcha’s career. The Bachchan beta had just tasted success, and they didn’t want anything to mar that. The negative vibes Abhishek attracted from his fans after his Ash chapter was another factor in the end of this prem kahaani.

Amitabh against it
Says a source close to the family, “Amitabh Bachchan was always against the marriage. Jaya had accepted it with resignation, because of Abishek. But momma Bachchan told people that if Ash and Abhishek did get married, they would stay separately; and not at Jalsa, with the family. If that happened, it wouldn’t have taken them much time to split up. Because Abhishek is a very strong-willed person, and doesn’t listen to anyone except his parents.” Continues the source, “Till more than two weeks ago, everything was fine between Ash and Abhishek. Ash had been talking to her close friends about marrying him. She had even mentioned how actresses were calling Ashutosh Gowariker and telling him to give her role to them, as she was getting married. Ash had laughed and said, ‘They are talking as if I will give up my work after marriage’. Abhishek, too, had told some of his director friends that he would do their films if they signed Ash opposite him.”

Havan back out
Then came the crunch, when the Bachchans discovered Ash was manglik. Of course, there are some who insist that it was Abhishek’s roving eye that led to the break-up. But Abhishek’s friend denies this. “Anybody with a strong Mangal in their chart casts a negative impact on their spouse’s career. But the Bachchans had accepted that. All they wanted was a havan to be conducted by Ash’s family, which the Rais initially agreed to. But they backed out at the last moment. In fact Aditya, Ash’s brother, doesn’t believe in astrology, and asked her not to follow it. Not doing the havan upset Jaya; she categorically told the Rais that it would either be their way, or no way.”

Ha-Ha Interesting Old Ppl News

Dharmendra or “Dilawar Khan?”

Film star Dharmendra, now a BJP MP, could not have thought in his wildest dreams that his second marriage to “Aaisha Bi R. Chakravarty” alias Hema Malini would come to haunt him one day. Dharmendra had converted to Islam to marry Hema Malini as Hindus are not allowed second marriage. Their marriage was solemnised on 21 August 1979 in Bombay in accordance with Islamic rites. He had married Hema while his first wife Prakash Kaur was still alive. Had he not contested the Lok Sabha elections from Bikaner, the matter probably would not have come to light.

While filing his nomination papers as a BJP candidate before the returning officer, Dharmendra had written his name as Deol Dharmendra Kewal Krishn concealing his Muslim name Dilawar Khan and wrote the name of his first wife in the respective column. When his political rivals brought the issue to the notice of election authorities and the general public, he denied his conversion to Islam and change of name. But Delhi magazine Outlook published a photocopy of his Nikahnama (marriage document) which clearly said that Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn (44 years) accepted Aisha Bi R. Chakravarty (29 years) as his wife on 21 August 1979 at a mehr of, Rs 111,000 in the presence of two legal witnesses…’ The nikah was solemnised by Maulana Qazi Abu Talha Misbahi Faizabadi.
Two Congress leaders of Madhya Pradesh, Akhtar Baig and KK Mishra filed a lawsuit against him in Indore’s sessions court demanding rejection of his nomination papers on account of submission of false information and concealing his conversion to Islam and adoption of a Muslim name, demanding trial under section 420 of IPC.According to Akhtar Baig and Congress leader from Rajasthan, Nawal Kishore Sharma, under Hindu Marriage Act, a Hindu cannot take a second wife if the first wife is still alive. However, he can marry for a second time if he has divorced his first wife or embraced Islam.

I thought Hema Malini was hot back in the day- and definitely one of those women that have aged well. Actually its kind of a tangent, but its good to see that most Indian Actresses have aged really well- Dimple Kapadia, Rekha, Sridevi, Sharmila Tagore, Simi Grewal ... Now if we could only say the same of the Indian men :)

Time Pass

Okay, so there is seriously nothing NOTHING going on in Bollywood worth talking about these days. So we thought, what better than to stir up some old shyte .. Here is a loooong transcript of one of the most explosive stories from the last year. Yep the Salman-Ash tapes!! I still can't hardly believe half of the stuff in here despite evidence to the contrary:

Note the following excerpts have been taken from Mumbai Mid-Day, Hindustan Times etc:

Explosive transcripts of a conversation between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were released by a paper this morning. Hindustan Times reported in its Mumbai edition launched today, Salman told his then lover Aishwarya that he had connections with the underworld. The paper’s editor, Avirook Sen, said he had authenticated the tapes' contents. “These telephone conversations between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were recorded between August 28 and 30, 2001.
Furious Salman accused Ash of sleeping with all her co-stars and bragged about affairs with Preity, Dia. In January 2001, Aishwarya Rai was part of an event called Craze 2001, where she, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Gracy Singh and the entire cricket team from Lagaan did 16 shows across Europe, Canada and USA. Ash was packing to leave for the show. Salman starts calling her on the eve of her departure. The conversations start friendly enough, but rapidly degenerate into threats, boasts and abuse.

Salman: Madam ko phone dena
Ash: Hello? Bolo baba
SK: I am not your baba
Ash: What is wrong now?
SK: Your baba could be dad. Anybody. It could be anybody from Nikki to Farukh, Shah Rukh to Abhishek to anybody.
Ash: Stop it, what is wrong with you?
SK: Something that you would know. You blame me for destroying your life. Sit down peacefully.
SK: Exactly. Can I go on and on about you?
Ash: Salman Khan, you have already gone on and on about me
SK: Now what?
Ash: You are only saying…
SK: You have to leave. It’s already 2:15
Ash: I am sending my bag
SK: That is OK. You are carrying extra baggage
Ash: What?
SK: You are carrying extra luggage.
SK: You are carrying a lot of extra luggage with you. As much as I can take off you, I’ll take off you. Did I hurt you big time? I should be calling around. You should not be calling around. Somy didn’t complain of that
Ash: Complain about what?
SK: That I need to sleep. You were awake at 6 o’clock in the morning
Ash: Didn’t I take your call?
SK: I came back at 3, 4, 5 in the morning
Ash: Anything else, Salman Khan?

When Ash would go to Salman’s home, his parents allegedly made her feel unwelcome.

Ash: Salman Khan, I was thrown out of your house
SK: You said you were leaving so what should I do? They were all on your side.
Ash: I could have sat there; what were you doing there?
SK: Exactly. You were complaining

Somy Ali was Salman’s girlfriend before Ash. But even after breaking up with Somy, Salman refused to throw her out of his life and Ash naturally wanted to be the only woman in his life. It made them fight a lot. There were also rumours that Salman was married to Somy. This message was left on Somy’s voicemail

SK: Somy aao beta. Tum ne phone off kiya, aur tum bolti ho ki mujhe yeh karna hai, woh karna hai. Phone off kyu kiya? Raat bhar off kiya. Uske pehle bhi off kiya. Aur mujhko blame karti ho tum. Oh you have lost a Salman Khan, you have lost a Salman Khan. Ghar ka phone off kar diya aur mobile bhi off kar diya(on a phonecall)
Somy: Off nahin hai, Salman Khan
SK: Tum hamesha sab ka phone leti ho

Salman always thought Ash had an affair with all her co-stars, including Aamir and Abhishek. On the sets of Rohan Sippy’s Kuch na kaho, he stormed onto the sets and crashed against Aishwarya’s car.

Ash: Don’t you ‘dare’ me!
SK: Don’t you dare f**k with me, Ash.
SK: Put the phone down you f***ing bitch. F**k Aamir, F**k Aamir, F**k Aamir, F**k Aamir. You f***ing bitch. You f***king slut. F***k Abhishek. F***k Aamir. In your f***ing history. F***ing slut. Nobody has been f***ing like people have f***ked you. You f***king slut.
Ash: Like what?
SK: Put the phone down, it’s a mistake. It’s a mistake calling you up! It’s a mistake calling 100 people to get your number! It’s a mistake finding out how you are! By the time you come back, I am going to get married. F**k you, slut. You b***h. Are you Aishwarya Rai? Are you Aishwarya Rai?

Salman would beat Ash. Ash came to a film awards night wearing dark glasses saying she had slipped and fallen against the steps. Salman would keep getting into fights with her father, break glass and doors at her home, call her at odd hours and harass her parents. He also had other affairs during their relationship but would keep tabs on Ash all the time.

SK: I used you. I used you. I used you right. I used you. The way I used you, you used me. I am glad you woke to the way you used me like I used you. Once in a while, when you fucked my happiness, once in a while. Now 47 days from today. 47 days!
Ash: You are counting all the days.
SK: If Aamir calls you at 5 or 6 in the morning, your mom will be more than happy. Aamir is going to f**k my daughter, a married man, but she has problems with Salman Khan!
Ash: (inaudible)
SK: Yes I like his b***s. So do you.
Ash: Enough!
SK: And you will get to them before I do. And you will lick him through his underwear.

When Ash avoided his calls, he would call her spot boy or make-up man and find out where she was.
SK: Aishwarya Rai, Aishwarya Rai, I had to call up 100 people to get through to your mama
Ash: You abused me. You come inside and abuse me?
SK: He is good for you. He does not talk about you to anybody
Ash: Which conversation?
SK: Aamir’s conversation
Ash: This is one big rubbish

There have been no rumours linking Salman and Preity

SK: Aamir Khan chaat raha hai aur bhag gaya chheen ke. Akshay Khanna chat raha tha aur bhag gaya. He is sorry.
Ash: Sorry. Do you remember the good time we had watching Biwi Number 1?
SK: Who is interested in Aa Ab Laut Chale? You know I f**ked Preity Zinta on the sets of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Quite a f**k.
Ash: Don’t try to maro line.
SK: I don’t want that bitch’s number. I want your number.
Ash: You tried your luck.
SK: Yeah. I did that. But it is not a problem.
SK: She’s masturbated on me 100 times.
Ash: To make her what?
SK: Take it easy, Ash.
Ash: No, no
SK: Take it easy.
Ash: Take her what?
SK: I said thrice. This is the fourth time. I can make Preity Zinta masturbate on the floor any time. You have all the shit. You know all that stuff. Come on, Ash, you’re going to meet Aamir right now!
Ash: Stop all the crap.
SK: What, we’re talking crap right now? Yeah, right.
Ash: That wasn’t an honest request.

Aishwarya Rai was in the US for a show Craze 2001, when Salman called her.

SK: Those guys will take care of you. Apurva (Sohail Khan’s assistant) and others have been instructed. The Moranis are scared too. There is no problem.
Ash: ...Apurva is really sweet but...
SK: He better be, he better be. Like Abu Salem who is sweet to you. He will be sweet to you and say, ‘Aye b*******d to Preity Zinta. Because of my connections with the underworld, a man like Abu Salem will be sweet to you and be rude to Preity and Anil Kapoor and all those people.
Ash: Stop talking rubbish.
SK: It’s a fact, okay!

Salman and Dia Mirza allegedly had an affair during the Jodhpur outdoor shoot of the film Tumko Na Bhool Payenge

SK: I have the power to do that. Do you know the underworld people call me at 12 at night because I am the main guy in Bombay. You know the underworld is controlled by me? You know I can do that. Why are you saying I’ll be in trouble?
Ash: I heard about Dia Mirza.
SK: Ah. I f****d Dia Mirza too. Hello?

Zee Movie Awards 2006

Just saw the Zee TV Movie Awards last night. They were held in Mauritius last week and broadcasted LIVE!!! After my post about the Filmares, I wanted to share my opinions about the Zee awards. I liked these MUCH better than the Filmfares. The performances were more creative. The host, Karan Johar, was more together and did a great job at entertaining the audiences. The sets were much larger and better managed. The show flowed smoother than most others. Pace was much faster so kept you interested in watching the show. The film industry presence wasn't as high but considering it was in another country, the turnout wasn't bad at all. Apparently they flew out actors in several chartered 777's .... can u imagine .... being on a plane full of actors and directors and producers .... it looked like a lot of fun. The big-wigs like Yash Chopra & Himesh Reshamia & Saif Ali Khan got to sit in First Class while new comers and lil' people like Kalyug star Kunal Khemu & Rand De Basanti's Sharman Joshi had to ride economy. It looked like a blast regardless.

Winners were the same ... Black: best movie, diretor, actor, actress. That has been the case at EVERY award show this year. Rest of the not so interesting awards were also very similarly handed out w/ Parineeta, Iqbal & Black sharing most of them.

How Abhishek dumped Dipannita

Dipannita Sharma While Abhishek Bachchan might be basking under the glory of newfound love with Aishwarya Rai, his former girlfriend, Dipannita Sharma, is yet to come to terms with the break-up of their 10-month relationship. After Mumbai Mid-Day broke the news, Dipannita confronted Abhishek and the duo parted ways on January 30. While she’s yet to break her silence, Dipannita’s close friends in the modelling circuit say “Abhishek hurt her feelings and put an end to the relationship in the most cowardly way.” Party pooper

Abhishek Bachchan says a close friend, “Abhishek initially appeared to be the most genteel guy on earth, but turned out to be the opposite. Before they broke up, Dipannita wanted to do something special for her beau’s birthday (February 5). But Abhishek said that he was busy shooting around-the-clock, and had no intentions to celebrate because of his father’s recent illness. Later, he had a grand bash at his bungalow, with Ash as a special guest. Dipannita wasn’t even invited; that shows his true character.” Adds an actor who attended the bash, “I even messaged Dipannita, and she said she wasn’t aware of the party.” Aby did the chasingSources say it was Bachchan Jr who had pursued Dipannita for more than two months before they started dating. “It was Abhishek who used to make incessant calls to her and cajole her to meet him. He had attributed it to her simplicity, honesty and beauty. From a well-known family of freedom fighters, in Assam, she wasn’t too keen on dating someone from the industry.

Gradually, things worked out but Abhishek never had the guts to acknowledge the relationship. He always advised her to keep a low profile and never declare their relationship when questioned by the media. I would say Abhishek fooled Dipannita. And today, his friends Sonali Bendre and Goldie Behl call Dipannita to ensure her well being. This is ridiculous.” Bips warned herSays another source, “After Abhishek started shooting for Umrao Jaan in Jaipur, he would keep telling Dipannita that hectic work and his mood swings were taking a toll on their relationship. And that was unfair on her.”It is learned that Bipasha Basu had cautioned Dipannita.

Says the same source, “Bipasha and Dipannita used to be roommates during their modelling days. Bipasha had told her about Abhishek’s growing fondness for Ash.” Meanwhile, Dipannita has just returned after a short vacation to her hometown. Nursing a broken heart?
