one of my favorite shows ... I can't wait for this one to come back. Here's an article on mid-day about what to expect on the next season:
Koffee with Karan is preparing to return with B-town’s biggest and best in November (Johar starts shooting for season two in October). Karan, who has just returned from London, walks into his office wearing his Prada shades (like all devils do) and a week-old stubble. He is suffering from jetlag and downing lemon tea in his office, before heading for a meeting with Star TV’s Sameer Nair to discuss the return of his show. Here’s what you can expect to see in KWK Dwitiyaa.
Lots of expectations after the first season. Is that playing on your mind?Yes. But what we’ve tried to do is to not think of that. Everybody’s wondering who I’m going to call on the show now. I’m going to call back a lot of the same people who were in the first season, but in unusual combinations. People will want to see the same stars. Viewers like to see what people from the film fraternity have to say, have to chat about, talk about… so I’ll call the same people. As you know, people’s lives, relationships and circumstances keep changing so there will be new things to talk about.
Like Abhishek and Aishwarya…Why? Something happened between them?
We’ll come back to that later. So, what’s different this year? The set is different, but I’m the same. I’m ageing, so I am trying to be young, more alive, hip and happening in this season. I’m combating the age phenomenon, so I will just try and look cooler, if that’s possible. Actually, it’s impossible but the endeavour will be there.
You’ve exhausted all your star friends. Won’t that be a drawback? No, they will all be back but in different combinations.
So this time we might see Abhishek with Ash?But why do you want Ash and Abhishek together? Oh, because they’re in Dhoom 2, Umrao Jaan and Guru? Yeah, maybe because of their films, I should get them together. But I’m thinking of Abhishek in a more interesting way. Even Ash. I might also want to get Ash and Hrithik together because they are in Jodha-Akbar and in Dhoom 2. I’m keeping my mind open to many combinations.
The second season of most shows don’t fare well. Happened to KBC too.Sequels of movies, or second seasons of shows are always torn apart. Everything is compared and analysed. However great, good, or bad the second season is, as long as people watch it in numbers, that’s all one wants. Are there any fears in your mind?Oh, they’re always at the back of my mind. We are all nervous of what we should do. So one day, I just turned to the team and told them, ‘Let’s not over-think. Let’s not try and overcook the show just to prove a point. Let’s just be ourselves, the way we were.’ That’s what worked in season one. Let’s make more interesting combinations, change the set, and include some fun segments in the end that’ll make the show alive, different, unusual and talked about.
So the plan is…?I want to go a little mad with the show in terms of making it more irreverent, more tongue- in-cheek, more fun... and I hope people have fun. I’m praying that they actually do. I have a sense of humour about myself. I don’t mind anyone saying anything about me on national television or in print, if it’s said in jest. I’ll take it in that spirit. Let’s hope that everyone in this country develops a sense of humour. That’s the only way to survive.
What about the stars’ sense of humour?I hope they do too. Most of them are very sporting and very happy to be on the show. I have had no kind of backlash. Do you show the stars your questionnaire before you go on air?Never. They joke and ask me, ‘What are you going to ask in the rapid fire round?’ But I’ve never showed the questionnaire to anyone. And I think everyone who comes on the show comes in good faith. They know I would never cross the line.
And where do you draw that line?I always tell my guests, ‘I will ask you, you deny it and I’ll accept that. The fact that I am asking you is the fun element.’ And I make it a point not to ask anything that is not already been written about or talked about. If a star friend has confided in me, I will never bring that up on the show. I would ask questions that the world is asking. I would never ever ask what is sacred or a secret to them. That I am very careful about.
So your priority is your friendship?Yes. My relationships are far more important to me than the show, or my films, and my career. Offending people is not my thing. But being naughty, well that’s another thing.
Ajay Devgan refused to appear last season. Will you invite him this time?I don’t like to pressure people. I was very keen to have Ajay on season one, more so because I’d worked with him as a producer in Kaal, and he’s Kajol’s husband. But I think he’s just media shy in general. So I don’t want to push him because he really feels awkward coming on a show of this nature, so I will not try again.
Will you begin again with SRK and Kajol?(Grins) Can I not comment on that?
Mallika Sherawat was mentioned on every episode of KWK but she never made it to the show…(Laughs) Yes, she was the unofficial brand ambassador of the show. I meet her all the time and she says you’ve mentioned me in every show and not had me in any. But that’s because every time I went to her with an interesting combination, she had another idea. But this time, I will. Pyaar Ke Side/Effects has just released, and it looks like a fun film though I haven’t seen it.It is fun…I am sure it is. Rangita Nandy has a great sense of humour and I’m sure she has made a fun film.
How about Rangita with Mallika?Sorry, darling. But we only call stars on the show. Mallika and maybe Rahul will be a nice combination. Ok, what’s the worst compliment you’ve gotten for the show? It’s from my best friend, Adi (Chopra). He says he can’t bear to see me on television. As a mark of protest, he doesn’t watch my show. He feels I should be making movies, not ‘stuff like this’!
